The Mustang League (3rd and 4th graders) is by far the biggest league. The league is organized to achieve competitive balance.
All participants are required to attend an evaluation session in February. This evaluation, along with the child's school and grade, forms the basis of team placement. Each player will have at least one other player from their school and grade on their team.
This is the first level where games start to look like "real" baseball with children doing all of the pitching including mandatory pitching by 3rd graders. Games are called by student umpires. The season ends with a modified double elimination playoff.
Generally, each team plays one or two games during the week and has a game on Saturday. In addition, each team has a practice at least every other week and sometimes weekly depending on field availability.
Children play both outfield and infield positions in each game (a league requirement) to help ensure a positive experience and maximize skill development. The entire roster bats each game and equal play is also mandatory. Games generally start at 5:30 pm during the week, and are played throughout the day on Saturday. Games are up to six innings and last about an hour and a half. Games are played at Kenilworth Pee Wee, Kenilworth North, Winnetka #3, and Northfield #1. The highlight of the year is the Championship game.
Practices are scheduled to start the week after spring break with the first games in mid April. The playoffs will conclude the 2nd weekend of June. Teams will usually have 11 to 12 players per team with players coming from several schools.
